Update from Electric Arcadia

Hi there earthlings,

My film project that I shot while at Arteles in Finland took a pause for a while, but I have recently been making some progress.

During the weekends this January, I have been working in-residency at Electric Arcadia, a studio / retreat / event space and home of Linda Heck in Sewanee, Tennessee. While in Sewanee, I have wandered around the University of the South's campus, revisited the footage I shot in Finland and worked on animations that will be a part of the final four-part series. I also took this time to learn a new animation program - Procreate Dreams - which I am loving…

Hunting is forbidden, fishing is allowed.

This quote from Alejandro Jodorowsky’s 10 lessons for Learning to Make Films D’auteur kept me company and left me pondering during much of my time at Arteles:

“Filmmaker! An anthology of fragments, you too are a fragment. Your film, unfinished, just a part, a continuation. There is no finishing. Kill the word Ending. You'll start making a movie the day you realize you are just continuing what you already started. Never try to achieve prestige. Disregard the bombastic. Don't decorate. Don't try to anticipate what the image will convey. Don't look for them. Receive the images. Hunting is forbidden, fishing is allowed.

In gratitude and wonderment,

Kari Leigh “Bunny” Ames

Finland Film Photos!

I have finally developed all of the 35mm photos I took over the course of my month-long excursion in various areas of Finland! You’ll find pictures of the lands around Arteles Creative Center, the island fortress of Suomenlinna, shots I took while filming my video project, and a land art piece we visited called Up and Under by Nancy Holt.

MUSIC VIDEO: "Cerulean" by Jack Silverman

The video I directed and edited for Jack Silverman’s Cerulean is out now on YK Records! Big, huge thanks to Jack and YK for asking me to create this music video. I used footage from public archives as the imagery for this project, inspired by found footage and archival recordings of abandoned and ancient places around the world.

MUSIC VIDEO: "Miss Cleo's Time Warp" by Mouth Reader

Starring Evan Neuman and Taylor EzellDirected, edited and visual effects by Kari (Bunny) AmesMusic by Mouth Reader

I was super honored to direct and add visual effects to this video vision by Nashville’s long-standing psych outfit Mouth Reader! All effects were achieved with analog devices and then digitized. This video stars Evan Neuman and Taylor Ezell with additional appearances by the band’s members Kyle Frary, Dylan Frost, Jack Tellmann & Michael Deano. I was inspired by my favorite tv show The Mighty Boosh and commercials from Miss Cleo’s Psychic Network in the 90’s. Peer into the crystal ball and reveal your misfortune ;)

Argus was the very first artist to ask me to create a music video for them and sole member Conner Sullivan will forever have my utmost appreciation and respect for launching me on the path I have taken. I was very thrilled to work on this music video for his new track “HYŪGA” and also to collaborate on the design for the camouflage ritual garment he wears in the video. Face obliteration!

MUSIC VIDEO: "Saint Theresa of the Roses" by The Upside-down

The Upsidedown's seminal debut album "Trust Electricity" remastered on silver vinyl out of Divorce Money Records December 4th, 2020order here: https://divorc...

Through cosmic intervention, I crossed digital paths with Jason Adams of The Upsidedown and was asked to create a music video for a track from the reissue of their 2004 LP Trust Electricity. I chose the song Saint Theresa of the Roses because I was drawn to its melancholic vibration and kept passing a church named after the saint during this time period.

This video was shot entirely on VHS and I was inspired by David Lynch, Sister of Mercy videos and the legend of Saint Theresa offering roses, her symbol of psychic wedlock, to devout vigilists.

Power Spell Yoga featured in Eating Well magazine!

Ahhh! When Meg and I first started Power Spell over 2 years ago, we NEVER imagined the amount of support we would receive and people we would touch and befriend through heavy metal yoga. It is an honor to help create a space for metalheads of all types to come together on their mats. We are proud to have been featured in this article in Eating Well magazine, written by Liz Talago! You can catch us every Wednesday at the Crying Wolf for a 21+ session, always donation based and as always, all are welcome. Hail yourself! — KLA

POWER SPELL EATING WELL

Do Headstands to Heavy Metal

Power Spell Yoga in Nashville is sidestepping the standard chanting-monk soundtrack, instead playing heavy metal in the back room of the Crying Wolf bar, picked for its hard-rock vibe. "There's a misconception that yogis should look and act the same, which can be a turnoff if you feel like you don't fit in," says founder Meghan D'Amico (pictured above, center). So this donation-based practice works to create an inclusive, welcoming space for the city's community of metalheads and punks (and anyone else who'd rather do sun salutations to The Sword). "Our goal is to bring people together to meditate and move—we just happen to also love metal!"

MUSIC VIDEO DEBUT: "Static Snake Charmer" by Al Lover >>> BRISTOL IN STEREO

I’m so excited this project is finally out in the world for all to see! I first met Al Lover when he performed at Far Out Fest in May 2018 and we became friends, hard and fast, starting with easily convincing him to join us at our unofficial after-party at the local goth night.

I hand-drew the title cards and used risograph printed images to create the stop-motion animated sequences. I also worked with my crew in Labrys Light Show to create abstract layers reminiscent of the movements of sidewinder snakes.

Channeling inspiration from the title “Static Snake Charmer”, we explore our connection to the Earth through a kind of hypnotism, tuning into the universal image of rebirth.

Here’s the first look, via Bristol In Stereo, who described it as “gorgeously rich”:

Curating the Vibe! >>> THE EAST NASHVILLIAN

This was the most amazing honor for me to appear in the 2018 Music issue of The East Nashvillian! In 2018, I did more interviews than ever and every one was a new and awkward learning experience for me. Thanks to Brittney McKenna for being a lovely interviewer and Travis Commeau and Natasha Colleran for making me feel so comfortable during the shoot in the white-hot heat and making me look pretty alright.

The amount of people who have stopped me to look me in the eyes and tell me they loved the article has just touched my heart deeply. Read it on The East Nashvillian here.

MUSIC VIDEO DEBUT: "Forest Shadows Enshroud the Styrian Castle at Dusk" by Crypt of Carmilla

This was a fun pet project for me to work on for Nashville-based dungeon synth artist Crypt of Carmilla. We shot on location in Mount Olivet cemetery, one of my regular haunts since my teenage years, as well as other locations around the city, including my basement (for that perfect dungeon look). I also enlisted the assistance of my collective Labrys Light Show to achieve the psychedelic liquid light effects throughout. Logo design by Kelsea Goesmann. Enjoy 🦇 —KLA
